We love vertical gardens for several reasons: they add a lot of color to the space where you put them, bringing a sense of Zen and calmness to the space and to you. On top of that, they look very exotic and are low maintenance.
When you design a vertical garden is important to have a clear design in mind that takes into account the space where it is placed, the amount of light it receives and the amount of time you want to invest into maintaining it. Having said that, we think it’s safe to assume that most people will want to build a vertical garden that is as low-maintenance as possible. For that reason we have created a list of plants that will embellish your house, while implementing biophilic principles and being as easy to care for as possible.
GOLDEN PHOTOS
This plant is a very popular option for a good reason. It is one of the more forgiving indoor plants, tolerating low or bright light, a lot of water or dry spells, rich or poor soils, neutral, alkaline or acid environments. They teach us about resilience as they withstand even the harshest conditions. This plant does best when it gets bright, indirect light but it can sustain medium to low light. Water it with 26 oz of water a week.
BROMELIADS
Bromeliads come in a lot of different colors and sizes, and have shallow roots, needing little space to grow, which makes them ideal plants for vertical gardens. You can mix and match the different colors and varieties to add interest, texture and dimension, which will make your vertical garden look thought-out and intricate. In cultures like Aztec, Mayan and Inca bromeliads are considered to be a “gift from God” that provide protection. This plant prefers full or partial sunlight and a cup of water per week during dry periods.
FERNS
They are one of the garden plants that are preferred for their adaptability. Ferns are easy to grow, making your vertical garden very plush and luscious, with a lot of green foliage. Just like bromeliads, they also come in different kinds of colors and textures, which will add points of interest to your wall. Ferns represent different things in different cultures, but it generally symbolizes youth, new beginnings and hope. They tend to favor shaded areas and keeping a moist soil in between watering.
SUCCULENTS
Succulents are beautiful plants shaped like big, thick flowers that comes in different shades of blue, green, pink and purple. They have become incredibly popular in the last 10 years because they are beautiful and easy to care for. Having very shallow roots makes them perfect for vertical gardens as it doesn’t require a lot of space to grow. Succulents represent femininity and endurance, bringing a sweet and loving message into your home. They require bright, indirect light and water once a month.
DRACAENA
These go really well in a vertical garden mainly because its leaves stand up right, without drooping. They come in different colors and sizes, all with a tropical and wild feel to them. They require bright, indirect light. Water it once a week with 16 oz of water.
MOSS
Moss is a great plant to use in vertical gardens because it’s very maleable and takes different shapes. It requires no regular maintenance. Keep it in an area with indirect light and spray it when you want to bring its color back.
