What Is Preserved Moss and How Long Does It Last?

Preserved moss is moss that is no longer alive and has been chemically preserved and repurposed for decorative purposes and artistic medium. Preserved moss brings powerful, natural energy to any setting.

You may have seen a few displays in high-end hotels and restaurants, luxury spas, gyms, and pools, or even residential apartments. It is common to spell out simple messages, or even do entire murals using preserved or dry moss.

Moss brings the serene, healing energy of nature into any residential or commercial space. As botanical artists, this is our preferred medium for wall art, topiary sculptures, and other installations.

Process For Preserving Moss

Part of what makes this medium special is the fact that it is made out of natural moss. Do you know how to preserve moss? Our artisans do. The moss goes through  a process called glycerinization. It involves using an agent that preserves the moss and stops the growing process.

The process begins with handpicking natural moss, drying it out, and preserving it. A special dye is also applied to maintain the natural color of the moss. After preservation, artists and installation experts apply the moss in custom designs including moss art, moss walls, and other installations.

Is Preserved Moss Living And Growing?

The answer is no. To preserve plants, sap is replaced by a chemical that maintains them in perfect condition for a really long time. When preparing it for such an installation, you cannot keep the moss alive. That’s why no preserved product is able to grow.

While living moss walls exist and will grow, they require constant maintenance. In these cases, the moss needs to be placed in an area with regular sunlight and water.

How Long Does Preserved Moss Last?

The beauty of using preserved moss is that it requires no maintenance, but still adds a green touch and element of freshness to your space. This is an important feature for fast-paced restaurants, luxury hotels, and corporate offices as it brings the calming, refreshing effects of nature into any space. The preserved moss can maintain its texture and color for years when kept out of direct sunlight and AC vents.

Modernistic restaurants and bakeries are becoming more popular, and décor such as preserved moss can help demonstrate an allegiance to the natural world. They can do so without ever having to water the display or worry about making sure that it gets enough sunlight. Preserved moss should last indefinitely.

Are Moss Installations and Moss Displays Completely Maintenance-Free?

While moss walls don’t require ongoing care in terms of irrigation or trimming, they do require your attention, you should schedule annual check ups for your moss installation.

Those check ups usually consist of making sure individual moss pieces are all holding in place as curious people may touch it from time to time and damage it over time. Our team can handle particularly stubborn pieces when we conduct these inspections.

Touch Up Dyed Moss

Over the years, preserved moss may begin to fade or change color in some areas.Refresh the moss with new preserved details and apply special moss dye in some areas as needed. Fabric dye is designed to work with this organic material.

Insects and other small feeders won’t be a problem as the plant contains no organic elements to feast on or use for building nests. However, it should be cleaned to remove dust or random spider webs.

What Is the Difference Between Preserved Moss and Dried Moss?

Dried moss is at the dormant state and will lose its green color over time. However, when rehydrated it will return to life and start growing again. Preserved moss is no longer alive and has been chemically treated to maintain its feel and allure.

How is Preserved Moss Used in Interior Décor?
